A multi-day hike is an unforgettable adventure to experience at least once in a lifetime. Maybe you are considering one or you already have some plans. Let us help you to choose everything you need for your next adventure.

Packing the backpack for a multi-day hike means finding the right balance between weight and necessary equipment: in other words, few but functional objects. During the hike, in fact, everything can change quickly so you have to be ready for any eventuality. This is why the choice of clothing and equipment is never left to chance.

We have prepared a guide on what to pack for a multi-day hike, listing all the equipment you may need and explaining why you may need them. You can adapt the list to your own hike, your habits, your actual needs since each experience is unique and extraordinary.

Are you ready? Let’s start!

A few questions to guide you to choose the right equipment:

  • Overnight stay. Are you plan to spend the night in some accommodation or have an experience in a tent? Based on this point, you will choose most of the equipment to bring (eg. tent, sleeping bag, camping kit, etc.) and consequently the size of the backpack.
  • Climate and weather. Are you planning to hike during the hot or the cold season? How is the climate in that area? Walking in rather cold periods of the year or in high-altitude areas will certainly require suitable and warm clothing. Bulky clothes require larger backpacks.
  • Trail. Do you already know the trail? Are there any waterways to cross? Before hiking, search as much information as possible on the route to become familiar with the trail.
  • Hydration. Can you easily find water supplies along the path? Are there any fountains? This point cannot be overlooked because it will allow you to pack in advance the right amount of water to carry.
  • Path. What is the difficulty of the path you are going to walk? Is it a flat trail or are there any altitude differences? Information about slopes and uneven grounds can help you to choose the most suitable shoes.
  • Solo or with hiking mate. Are you going to have a solo multi-day hike or walk with a hiking mate? Consider this point if you are planning to sleep in a tent and doing camping along the path (wherever allowed). If it is a group hike, you can share the equipment and lighten the backpack.

Keep these questions in mind while choosing what to pack for a multi-day hike. They can prove useful for planning in detail the experience and bringing only the things you really need.

Before showing the list of essential things to bring, let’s start with your best companion: how to choose the right backpack.

The backpack suitable for multi-day hikes

The backpack for the multi-day hike has essential characteristics that cannot be underestimated. In particular, you should search for a model that is:

  • Spacious to contain all the necessary equipment (but not extremely large otherwise you’d be tempted to fill it with unnecessary things),
  • Padded and breathable (especially on the back panel and shoulder straps) to keep your back always fresh,
  • Comfortable and appropriate for you (with straps and adjustable backrest to adapt to your height),
  • Equipped with a lumbar belt to distribute weight along the hips and keep the backpack stable while you are walking (find out why the hip belt is so important in the outdoor backpack)
  • Suitable for trekking and equipped with hooks for hanging equipment outside (e.g. trekking poles, tent poles, etc)

To guide you with the dimensions of the backpacks, keep in mind a generic classification:

  • Backpack up to 35 liters for day hikes,
  • Backpack up to 40/50 liters for multi-day hikes,
  • Backpack over 50 liters for longer hikes.

Obviously, habits, season, equipment and type of experience require different backpack models. If you want to deepen the topic, you can find useful information in our guide “How to choose a backpack“.

Always remember that a backpack designed for outdoors is equipped with a hip belt to transfer some weight along the hips. Moreover, you can adapt it to the body shape just by adjusting the straps (compression straps, load straps, chest straps). In our guide “how to adjust backpack’s straps” you will find a step-by-step explaination.

What to pack for a multi-day hike?

Clothing

A multi-day hike requires technical clothing that focuses on quality and not quantity. You don’t need too many bulky and heavy clothes, just have few pieces that you will wash and that’s it! Here are some tips for choosing suitable clothing to pack for a multi-day hike:

  • Dress in layers to adapt to any climatic conditions. A first layer absorbs moisture from the skin, an insulating and breathable intermediate layer (such as a sweatshirt) maintains body temperature and a waterproof outer layer protects you from wind, rain and snow.
  • Technical breathable and quick-drying clothing protect you from sudden changes in temperature. Nylon, polyester and fleece provides a great insulation.
  • Forget cotton clothes as they quickly absorb water and take a long time to dry.

Clothing depends most on the season and the kind of experience. We have prepared a list the includes everything you may need to pack for a multi-day hike and the reason why you need it. You can customize the list according to your needs:

  • Sweatshirt and long trousers. It is important to bring some long and warm clothes even in summer (eg. a fleece) in case of sudden drops in temperature.
  • Waterproof gore-tex jacket. Lightweight and useful in case of sudden thunderstorms.
  • Trekking shoes. Comfortable, suitable for the type of path, with non-slip sole, already used at least a couple of times (never hike with brand-new shoes).
  • Socks. Wool, nylon and polyester absorb moisture, dry quickly and do not create friction. Avoid models with seams that could cause blisters after hours of walking.
  • Gloves. Especially in autumn and winter but at high altitudes they are also recommended in summer.
  • Neck warmer. To protect the throat especially in autumn, winter and on windy days.
  • Hat. Especially in summer and at high altitudes to prevent sunstrokes.
  • Sunglasses with UV protection. To protect the eyes in any season, especially if you are walking close to reflective surfaces (eg water, snow).

  • Trekking poles. They help support weight and maintain balance (especially on slopes and on uneven ground)
  • First aid kit. Never leave without, in case of injuries it proves to be essential.
  • Headlamp. Great alternative to the phone flashlight especially for walking in poorly lit environments, before sunrise or after sunset.

How to prepare the backpack for a multi-day hike?

The position of the things in the backpack is not random. Preparing the backpack for a multi-day hike has a logic order that allows us to keep order inside the backpack and at the same time not weight down the shoulders.

  • Place lightweight, bulky and rarely used objects (e.g. sleeping bag and extra clothing) on the bottom of the backpack to form a base for the rest of your things.
  • Store heavy objects (e.g. camping stove and food supplies) as close as possible to your back or the body’s center of gravity (the navel) to keep the balance.
  • Insert small and frequently used items in the hood and in the external pockets of the backpack (e.g. GPS device, telephone, money, snacks, raincoat, first aid kit, flashlight).
  • Hang the specific equipment (eg poles, mat, sleeping bag and tent pegs) outside of the backpack using the appropriate hooks.

What to pack for a day hike on the mountain

The backpack is the main companion of hiking, trekking and outdoor activities enthusiasts. Before wondering how to prepare your backpack and what to bring for a day trip to the mountains, always keep in mind that the place, the climate and the altitude affect the choice of equipment and clothing.

Hiking with a backpack full of things that you will never use is never a good choice: it is better to take the time to choose only what you really need. Less is more.

The principle is to carry as little weight on your shoulders as possible but at the same time be ready for any eventuality and inconvenience. Always remember that in the mountains the weather can change very quickly.

You are about to read a list of things to bring on a day hike in the mountains and some tips that will help you choose what to pack and what to leave at home. In nature hikes, planning is the key.

Are you ready?

Choose a backpack suitable for a day hike

The backpack for a day hike to the mountains needs to be small: a model up to 30 – 35 liter is enough to carry everything you need just for one day. It is essential that it is comfortable, breathable and padded both on the backrest and on the shoulder straps in order to keep the back dry and not cause pain. Our guide on how to choose a backpack may prove useful to deepen the topic.

Most of the large backpacks have a padded hip belt, but it is common also in some smaller models suitable for day hikes. The hip belt is needed for:

  1. Distributing part of the weight of the backpack on the hips, relieving the shoulders
  2. Keeping the backpack stable so it doesn’t swing while walking

It is essential to fit the backpack to your body shape by adjusting the hip belt and all straps (compression straps, load straps, chest straps). Our guide on how to adjust the straps of the trekking backpack shows step by step how to adapt the backpack to your physical conformation.

What to bring for a day hike to the mountains?

Clothing and footwear

When hiking, remember to dress in layers. In this way you can add or remove some clothes according to the weather:

  1. The first layer is in contact with the skin to absorb moisture and sweat,
  2. The second insulating and breathable layer (e.g. fleece) maintains the body temperature steady,
  3. The third layer is windproof and waterproof.

Technical clothing are suitable for the mountains and keeps you warm even when the temperature change. Cotton is not recommended for hiking, trekking and for all outdoor activities as it quickly absorbs water and takes a long time to dry. The cold, wet layer in contact with the skin increases the risk of hypothermia. Yes to nylon, polyester and fleece which provide good insulation.

Let’s move to the trousers. The trousers need to be comfortable, warm and quick-drying (for this reason jeans, velvet or cotton trousers are banned). Long trousers are great to protect the legs from insect bites or irritation caused by plants.

As for the shoes, they must be waterproof, already tested, with non-slip soles and suitable for the type of trail. A hiking boot can support the ankle. No less important are the socks. Generally, socks in a wool blend and synthetic fibers (such as nylon and polyester) are the best to absorb sweat, dry quickly and do not create friction.

Obviously, everything depends on the season. Here you can find a general list of the clothing to wear for a day hike to the mountains:

  • Waterproof gore-tex jacket. Light and practical, it comes in handy in case of sudden thunderstorms
  • Fleece / sweatshirt and long pants. They are fundamental in case of sudden temperature changes
  • Gloves. Essential in autumn and winter, but at high altitudes gloves are needed also in summer
  • Additional socks. To prevent blisters while walking, in case they are wet you can change them
  • Towel. We recommend you a cooling towel: it not only absorbs sweat like traditional towels, but the fabric texture also releases a sensation of freshness in contact with the skin. Is it magic? Not at all, find out how it works in this guide.

Protection from sun and rain

In the mountains, the weather is very variable and within a couple of hours, you could find yourself under the scorching sun or in the middle of a storm. For a day hike it is necessary to bring:

  • Backpack rain cover. Essential to keep all your things dry in case of severe thunderstorms
  • Neck warmer. Especially in autumn and winter but in some areas exposed to the wind it is also fundamental in summer
  • Hat. To protect you from the sun and the cold as well
  • Sunglasses with UV protection. The eyes are delicate and deserve care
  • Sunscreen. Regardless of the season, it is useful if you are hiking at high altitude
  • Lip balm. Perfect for protecting your lips from wind and sun

Food and water

During hiking, we spend a lot of energy that’s why we need to carry some additional nutritious food supplies. Water deserves particular attention. While moving, the body expels plenty of liquids that have to be replenished to avoid unpleasant dehydration events.

  • Packed lunch. If you plan to have lunch outdoors or far from eating places
  • Energy bars. They provide energy and take up little space
  • Dried fruit. Energetic and rich in nutrients
  • Hydration bag. An handy hydration systems for drinking on the go
  • Vacuum flask. Perfect to keep the water fresh for a long time, we recommend at least 2 liters for day hikes.

Emergency and geolocalization

When you hike in the mountains, you need to take into account many risks and safety is never enough. Even it is a day hike, it is advisable to bring a couple of things that can save you from any eventuality.

  • First aid kit. In case of minor injuries, a first aid can save the hike
  • Headlamp. Essential for hike in poorly lit environments, before sunrise or after sunset
  • Map, compass and GPS. Fundamental for orientation
  • Whistle. It’s lightweight and useful for being tracked. Large backpacks often come with chest straps with a built-in whistle.
Whistle on the chest straps – Himalaya 65 liter backpack

Other necessary things

In addition to clothing, food and tracking and safety devices, in the backpack for a day hike you could need:

  • Trekking poles. They help support weight and maintain balance (especially on slopes and on uneven ground)
  • Dry bag. If the hike includes activities close to waterways, a waterproof dry bag isolates your things and protects them from water, mud, snow and sand. Give a look to our models.
  • Handkerchiefs and wet wipes. Useful in all circustances, especially if there are no waterways nearby
  • Power bank or solar charger. In case the phone runs out of battery, it comes in handy
  • Cover. Useful for lying on the ground
  • Camera. Optional choice
  • Binocular or monocular. To observe from a distance, look for gathering points or shelters.

So, preparing the backpack for a day hike is really simple, right? Rimember that the principle of the “less is more” is timeless.

Water is essential, better to bring a little more than risk dehydration in the middle of the hike. You can place two thermal bottles in the external side pockets and always have water close at hand.

Additional clothes (a t-shirt, a sweatshirt, a pair of long pants and a pair of socks) are lightweight and essential in case of rain or sweat. They can be placed at the bottom of the backpack. The main compartment has enough space to store most of the equipment. While in the smaller pockets of the backpack, you can place snacks, sunglasses and other small items. The waterproof jacket can be hung on the elastic cord outside of the backpack, saving valuable space inside.

Our guide “What to bring for a day hike to the mountains” is coming to an end. You can adapt the list according to your needs and your hikes. Remember to choose a suitable backpack. If you are planning a longer hike, we recommend taking a look at the complete list of everything you need for a multi-day hike.

What is a reusable vacuum flask?

The vacuum flask (also called a reusable bottle) keeps drinks hot and cold. Recently it is becoming very popular: colorful, practical and above all ecological. You think it’s the latest trend? No, it’s a real change. Be ready to say goodbye to disposable bottles of water for the joy of your wallet and the planet! A reusable water bottle, in fact, allows you to save money on the purchase of disposable plastic bottles and helps to decrease the amount of plastic produced (and not discarded) in the world. By the end of 2021, the European Parliament banned all disposable plastic products to reduce the environmental damage caused by plastic pollution.

What material is a reusable bottle made of?

Nowadays there are lots of alternatives to disposable plastic bottles that encourage the use of reusable and less polluting solutions. Follow our guide to learn about the differences and the materials of reusable bottles:

PLASTIC BOTTLES

Reusable plastic bottles are appreciated for their light weight and practicality. They are the cheapest alternative to disposable plastic and must comply with European Laws. There are various shapes, models and they can be rigid or foldable.

Pros: They are lightweight, cheap, durable and often can be put in a dishwasher.

Cons: The plastic could alter the taste of the water. It does not maintain the temperature steady and some chemical components contained in the material could be dangerous to health.

GLASS BOTTLES

Another alternative to disposable plastic is the glass bottles. The material does not release chemicals harmful to health and does not retain traces of the liquid previously contained. They can be used with all types of drinks but the glass is fragile and therefore uneasy to carry.

Pros: Safe for health, they keep the taste of drinks unchanged and they are dishwasher safe.

Cons: Glass bottles are heavy and fragile, that’s the reason why they are often used at home and are not recommended for outdoor activities.

ALUMINUM BOTTLES

Aluminum water bottles are lightweight and cheap but they are not stainless. This means that the inside of the wall needs a ceramic coating to isolate this metal from the liquid. This makes the material more resistant and able to not alter the smell and taste of the drinks. If the aluminum bottle falls, the inner lining could be damaged, become uneven so mold and bacteria could form among the ripples. Aluminum bottles are not suitable for containing hot drinks, fatty liquids (milk, oils) and acidic drinks (fruit juices, energy drinks, lemonade).

Pros: Aluminum water bottles are lightweight and cheap.

Cons: Dangerous for health, they could alter the taste and smell of drinks and are not suitable for all liquids.

STAINLESS STEEL BOTTLES

Stainless steel is common in products in contact with food. It is resistant and also does not corrode in contact with acidic drinks. As this alloy is stainless, the inner walls do not need any coating so, in case of impact, it remains intact.

Once washed, the stainless steel bottles do not retain the flavors and odors of the liquids contained previously. The European Law requires the use of certified and safe materials for health.

Pros: They are resistant, safe for health and do not alter the flavor. The stainless steel bottles guarantee excellent insulation for any kind of drink and keep the temperature steady for long.

Cons: Stainless steel water bottles are heavy, slightly more expensive than the other alternatives (especially if there is a double layer of insulation) and are not dishwasher safe.

HYDRATION BLADDER

Hydration bladders are not real alternatives to disposable bottles but are practical to carry during outdoor activities such as hiking, running and cycling. These are plastic containers to place into the appropriate pocket of the backpack and through an external tube it is possible to stay hydrated at any time.

Pros: Practical to put in the backpack to drink especially on the go.

Cons: Hydration bladders require washing and particular care to remove germs and bacteria.

Why does the vacuum flask keep drinks hot and cold?

The vacuum flask has this name because it keeps the temperature of the liquid inside unchanged. The walls of plastic, glass and aluminum bottles by nature cannot isolate the external temperature from the inner one.

Have you ever left a bottle of water inside the car during the summer? The plastic of the disposable bottle does not isolate the temperature of the liquid and in a couple of hours, the water becomes hot.

The vacuum flask, on the other hand, allows you to have the drink at the same temperature as when you filled it.

When we talk about a bottle with a double layer of insulation, we mean two insulation walls, an inner and an external one, that are separated by a layer of air. This structure slows down the heat transfer of the liquid to the outside and vice versa.

The vacuum flask does not know the difference between hot and cold, it does the same in both cases.

This is the reason why if you put hot coffee inside the vacuum flask, even if the outside temperature is particularly low (think of the freezing cold winter days), the temperature of the coffee will remain stable for several hours. The heat inside will be blocked by the first steel wall and then by the layer of air.

It works also on the opposite way. If we fill a vacuum flask with cold water and put it under the scorching sun, the temperature inside the bottle does not change and the water stays cold for a long time.

It is clear that a stainless steel vacuum flask with a double wall of insulation keeps the temperature steady for longer compared to a model with only one wall. So the price will be slightly more expensive.

What about the cap?

The double-wall contributes to the insulation but also the cap plays a fundamental role. In the vacuum flasks, there is often a screw cap with a small silicone part inside that allows it to adhere perfectly to the neck of the bottle: it prevents water from leaking and helps to isolate the liquid from the outside.

In fact, the hermetic closure seals the upper part effectively and prevents air from entering and altering the temperature of the liquid contained.

Now you may wonder: how long does the vacuum flask keep hot and cold?

In the bottle description it’s common to read Hot 12 hours – Cold 24 hours. These values are indicative and can change according to the real situation. The closure is the most vulnerable part and if you don’t screw the cap tightly or open the flask frequently, the temperature of the drink will change fast.

You can find other useful information in the guide “How to choose a reusable bottle“.

What are you waiting to choose yours? Our vacuum flask double layer 304 stainless steel keeps drinks hot up to 12 hours and cold up to 24 hours. Discover the 350 ml and 500 ml models and enjoy the colorful pleasure of life with Royal Eagle Road!

The backpacks are designed to withstand all weather conditions and the challenges you will face during your adventures, hikes, travels and explorations. There are many materials that make up the backpacks and in order to choose the right backpack for you and your explorations, it is important to know the different features of the fabrics.

Trekking backpacks, as well as camping and outdoor gears, are mainly made of nylon or polyester but there are also other materials out there.

In this guide you will find:

WHAT ARE THE MATERIALS OF THE BACKPACKS?

NYLON

Nylon is a synthetic fabric that comes from plastics (polyamides). It is one of the most common materials in outdoor backpacks since it is a sturdy, elastic, wear-resistant fabric. It is also one of the most expensive. Nylon backpacks are not completely waterproof. For this reason, they often come with internal linings to protect the contents and treated externally to increase water resistance. To the touch, nylon backpacks are soft and have a more shiny appearance.

POLYESTER

Polyester is a synthetic fiber, which is strong and resistant to tears and has a greater resistance to ultraviolet rays (UV). For these reasons, it is a common material for outdoor backpacks. During outdoor activities such as travel and hikes, continuous exposure to the sun can damage or crack the material, so the resistance to UV rays adds greater protection to the backpack. The backpack made of polyester will keep the color longer without losing its hue and will not create creases. Polyester is a fabric that does not absorb water and dries quickly, so the backpack is perfect for hiking in the snow or during rainy days.

Our backpacks Brigante 28 liter, Santiago 45 liter and Himalaya 65 liter are made in Polyester Ripstop 600 D.

Detail: hydration exit – Brigante 28 liter

CORDURA

Cordura is an excellent quality fabric used in high-end backpacks and highly technical products that require optimal performance such as military and sports clothing. It stands out for its strength, durability, abrasion resistance and higher cost.

COTTON CANVAS

Canvas is a sturdy and durable material that uses cotton in the manufacturing process. However, this material is rather heavy, not very waterproof and poorly resistant to abrasion. For this reason, cotton canvas backpacks are not suitable for outdoor activities while waterproof, light and resistant materials such as nylon and polyester are more appropriate. Nowadays, canvas backpacks are still very popular but manufacturers often combine cotton with other materials to lighten the weight and treat them with wax to increase waterproofing and resistance.

PVC

PVC is the abbreviation for polyvinyl chloride and is a durable and multipurpose material to create backpacks and also many types of workwear. They are naturally waterproof and prevent water, sand, mud and dust from passing through the fabric and reaching the inside of the backpack. They are also fireproof, and when used in backpacks, add color and waterproofness. PVC is a durable and lightweight backpack material, but in case of tears, it is difficult to repair.

zaino-impermeabile
Our dry bags are made of 500 D PVC to isolate your things from the outside and protect them during water sports, days at the beach and on the snow.

LEATHER

With a vintage and elegant look, leather backpacks have been fashionable for many generations. It is a durable and flexible material but heavier compared to other materials. They need the care to maintain quality and cannot be machine washed. Since leather derives from animals, nowadays there are many alternatives in imitation leather that ensure the same appearance but are industrially produced with synthetic materials that don’t come from animals.

COATING AND PU TREATMENT

In the product features, you may have found a PU treatment. This abbreviation means Polyurethane and refers to the coating applied to the outside of the backpack to make it more waterproof.

The duration of this coating can be shortened due to long exposure to heat, excessive humidity (e.g. a wet backpack for a long time) and chemical components (such as bleach, salt, chlorine). If you store the backpack in a dry and cool place, the waterproof PU coating can last for years of exploration.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN POLYESTER AND NYLON BACKPACKS?

Polyester and nylon are the most common materials in trekking and outdoor backpacks. They are both synthetic fabrics that come from polymers (unlike cotton that can be found in nature) but with different production processes.

Both materials are recyclable, strong, lightweight and more durable compared to natural fabrics. Even if quite similar, they have a few different features:

  • Water resistance and absorption. Polyester is more resistant to water and does not absorb it as the nylon does. In the event of a storm, a polyester backpack repels water and is more suitable for keeping all the inside contents dry. Both polyester and nylon are not completely waterproof, reason why backpacks often comes with internal linings and coated outside with PU treatments that increase water resistance.
  • Drying time. Polyester dries faster compared to nylon because it absorbs less water into the fabric. In the event of a storm, a nylon backpack would need more time to dry due to the greater amount of water absorbed.
  • UV resistance. Polyester is more resistant to ultraviolet rays and fades less compared to nylon. In case of summer hikes under the sun’s rays, even if the polyester backpack is colorful keeps the color unchanged for longer.
  • Softness, brightness and elasticity. Nylon is a more elastic fabric, soft to the touch and has a brighter look compared to polyester.

Nylon is no better than polyester. Polyester is no better than nylon. They have slight differences so nylon or polyester backpacks are both resistant but suitable for different situations.

WHAT DOES RIPSTOP MEAN?

Ripstop indicates a type of fabric where reinforcing threads are woven at regular patterns to make the material more resistant to tearing, abrasions and lacerations. These thick threads follow a grid pattern and in the event of tears, they prevent the tear from spreading throughout the fabric. That’s why it’s called Rip-stop.

Ripstop is used in products designed to withstand the toughest conditions, in direct contact with the ground or with the wind such as outdoor backpacks, travel bags, tents, sleeping bags, sportswear and camping hammocks, just to name a few.

This weaving technique not only makes the backpack more durable but also resistant to tears and water. It is for this reason that our backpacks are made of Poliestere Ripstop 600 D.

HOW TO UNDERSTAND IF A FABRIC IS STRONG AND DURABLE?

On the technical description of the backpacks, you may have found some specifications such as 600 D Polyester or 190T fabric. These values indicate the strength and resistance of the materials that make up the backpacks.

D – DENIER

The denier indicates the thickness and the weight of the filament used in the manufacture of the fabric. It refers to the mass of the material in grams for every 9,000 meters of a strand of yarn. For example, a 600 D polyester backpack indicates that 9000 meters of that fabric weigh 600 grams. The higher the denier value, the more durable and tear-resistant the fabric is. For example, a 600 D polyester backpack will be stronger than a 450 D of the same material. Although this value indicates the resistance of the fabric, it is not an absolute value common to all. Each fabric has different properties and textures so the polyester deniers will be different from those of nylon or Cordura.

T – THREAD NUMBER

In backpacks and mostly in fabrics is not common to find this unit of measure. For example, in the description of our Santiago 45 liter and Himalaya 65 liter you will find the rain cover made of water repellent 190T fabric 2000 mm. T indicates the number of horizontal and vertical threads in a square inch and determines the weight of a fabric. Also in this case, a higher number indicates that the yarn is tight and consequently the fabric is more resistant.

GSM – Grams per square meter

There are materials that do not have a texture, such as propylene, where the weight or the number of threads is irrelevant. In this case, the measuring unit of the material is grams per square meter.

CONCLUSIONS

To choose a backpack suitable for your exploration, consider all the features first, take some time to read the product description and make sure the material is sturdy. A backpack made of durable material can last ages. There are different materials that make up the trekking and outdoor backpacks but the most common are nylon and polyester.

Give a look at our Brigante 28 liter, Santiago 45 liter and Himalaya 65 liter. All of them are made in ripstop polyester resistant to scratches, abrasions and UV rays with inner lining in 210D polyester. To withstand all your explorations, in Himalaya 65 liter we have added Dobby polyester and a PU treatment layer to make it more waterproof.

During outdoor activities thunderstorms are frequent. For this reason, we have added a complimentary rain cover in water-repellent 190T fabric both in Santiago 45 liter and in Himalaya 65 liter.

What is a hip belt of a backpack?

Reading time 8 minutes

The hip belt, also called the waist belt, is made up of two large, padded parts that start from the lumbar pad and wrap around the waist. Generally, the length of the hip belt can be adapted to every body shape.

But what is a hip belt used for? The hip belt that we find in trekking and outdoor backpacks is designed for 2 main reasons:

1. DISTRIBUTE THE WEIGHT ALONG THE HIPS. When the load of the backpack is particularly heavy, the hip belt plays a fundamental role. If fastened and positioned correctly, it allows you to transfer the weight of the backpack to your hips, relieve your shoulders and prevent back pain.

2. KEEP THE LOAD STABLE. During movements, the backpack tends to swing and this can cause pain. The hip belt stabilizes the load towards the center of gravity of the body (the navel) and thus improves balance.

Most hip belts have pockets to keep at hand small items that could be useful on the go such as phone, GPS, maps, snacks, handkerchiefs. Other models include loops for attaching carabiners or small pouches.

Why is the hip belt a fundamental part in trekking and outdoor backpacks?

Every high-quality outdoor backpack is equipped with a padded lumbar belt. This is a fundamental part that will cushion up to 80-90% of the overall weight of the backpack.

This is one of the reasons why people choose outdoor backpacks non only for outdoor activities but also for travel.

If the load is heavy, only the shoulders cannot hold it, so you need to transfer the weight to the legs which are the strongest part of the body. Weight distribution is the key whether hiking or traveling.

A wide, sturdy and cushioned lumbar belt is always a wise choice.

Now let’s focus on the material of the hip belt. A basic fabric band without padding will keep the backpack close to the back without making it swing but it will not transfer the weight to the hips. A basic fabric band cannot be called a “hip belt”. Always make sure that the belt is sturdy and functional.

The Zurich Institute of Biomechanics carried out a study about the influence of the weight of the backpack and the tension of the lumbar belt on the gait. It showed that the waist belt can stabilize the backpack closer to the body and facilitate a more natural movement.

How to correctly adjust the hip belt?

The correct adjustment of the hip belt is essential and is the first step to follow to adjust the backpack to your body shape.

The ideal position is just above the hips, near the hip bones or above the iliac crests. Once you find the right position, adjust the length and hook the buckles.

If the belt is fastened too tightly, it can hinder movement and cause pain. On the other hand, if it is too wide, the backpack will naturally tend to slide down, straining the shoulders and back.

A tip from experienced hikers: a good hip belt has to be adjustable and comfortable. The length of the belt needs to be shortened or lengthened according to the body shape, the actual needs and the clothing worn.

With a hip belt adapted to your waist circumference and a height-adjusted backrest, your back will immediately feel lighter.

After adjusting the belt, move on to the shoulder straps, the load straps and finally the chest straps, as shown in the photo.

Small backpacks really needs a hip belt?

Small hiking backpacks (generally under 40 liters) often do not have a hip belt as they are designed for day trips and low-effort trekking. We at Royal Eagle Road have also provided a padded waist belt in Brigante 28 liter to make it suitable for various activities: from mountain hikes to bicycle rides, from horseback riding to motorbike trips.

On the waist belt of Brigante 28 liter you will find a zippered pocket on the right and a hook for the carabiner on the left. These additional features often come in handy.

Loop for carabiner – Brigante 28 liter

The pockets on the hip belt are essential: it is not always possible to remove the backpack to take the phone, passport or some coins but having them close at hand is much more practical.

It is a bit like having trousers with pockets: it is certainly more comfortable.

Pocket on the waist belt – Brigante 28 liter

In Santiago 45 liter and Himalaya 65 liter, the hip belt is wider and padded to better cushion the weight and consequently, the pockets are larger. We have made a simple zipper opening with a zip puller for easy access to the pockets (as well as to all compartments) even wearing the gloves.

Backpacking is exciting: you can climb mountains, walk along rough roads… You have the freedom to go anywhere and keep your hands free!

However, sometimes there is a worry related to the backpack: back pain.

Back pain while traveling could be caused by several factors: excessive physical effort, incorrect posture (especially after many hours sitting on means of transport) or a mattress that is too hard or too soft compared to the one we are used to.

Sometimes back pain can be caused by the backpack. Let me explain.

Walking for several hours with an extremely heavy and poorly padded backpack (especially on the backrest and shoulder straps) could cause annoying back pain and shoulder pain.

Back pain caused by the backpack could affect your adventure but fortunately there are ways to prevent it.

Make yourself comfortable because we have prepared 6 tips for you to enjoy your experience without letting annoying back pain stop your wanderlust.

Backpack and back pain: 6 useful tips

1. Choose a suitable backpack

Each backpack is different, just like each of us. Our travel buddy’s backpack does not necessarily suit us as well. Physical stature, height, muscle, backpack capacity, low weight and backrest are all things to consider when choosing a backpack. We suggest you check the exact size of the backrest and compare it with your back. In case of doubt, ask for a suggestion.

2. Key features

A comfortable backpack has a padded, rigid and well-reinforced backrest with a breathable system to keep the back dry during movement. The wide, padded shoulder straps cushion the weight on the shoulders and all the straps need to be easily adjustable for any body shape. The hip belt distributes a part of the weight on the hips and reduces the load on the shoulders. In addition to distributing the weight, the waist belt, along with the chest strap, ensures that the backpack remains stable and close to the back. If the backpack is steady, your back will maintain a correct and relaxed position without being in tension to follow the oscillations of the backpack. You can learn all the parts of the backpack in this detailed glossary.

3. Distribute the weight

The weight of the backpack shouldn’t exceed 20% of your body weight and has to be distributed symmetrically. This means that it would be better to travel light, optimize space and always carry the backpack on both shoulders. Packing a backpack is also fundamental: heavy items need to be close to the back to keep you balanced (this avoids the backpack pushing you backward). Lightweight and bulky items (e.g. sleeping bag) need to be placed at the bottom of the backpack to create a base for all the other things. Lightweight and not bulky items will be positioned at the top. If you distribute the weight correctly, the back will remain in a natural position and will not move backward to follow the oscillations of the backpack.

4. Pay attention to the physical efforts

Especially if the backpack is particularly heavy, a sudden effort could damage your back. Often in the rush to lift the backpack, we do not realize the position of our back: rather than bending it and keeping it in tension, we always suggest bending your knees and following the movement by extending your legs. By doing that, most of the effort is supported by the legs and not by the lumbar part of the back.

To balance your body, always grab the two shoulder straps, both when lifting the backpack and also when placing it on the ground. Give your back some rest from time to time and do some movement such as slow neck rotations or gentle shoulder massages.

5. Adjust the backrest accurately

Backpacks under 50 liters usually have fixed backrests that adapt to all physical conformations. Larger backpacks, on the other hand, can have adjustable backrests based on height and physical conformation. The reason is obvious: the greater the capacity of the backpack, the greater the length and consequently it is necessary to adapt it to one’s back. A backrest that is too short or too long is not just uncomfortable, but it leads to an uneven gait and an unnatural movement of the back to balance the weight. You can read a post dedicated to correctly fitting a torso length.

6. Wear the backpack correctly

Never underestimate a very important aspect: adjusting the backpack. Before backpacking, you need to adapt the backrest and adjust all the straps: hip belt, compression straps, load straps, and chest straps.

In fact, the hip belt plays a key role and is an excellent ally for the well-being of your back. It has been designed not only to make the backpack adhere to the back and make it steady but also to distribute the weight more evenly along the hips without loading on the shoulders during long walks. Most waist belts come with pockets to keep small items close at hand. The hip belt is essential and you will need to adapt it to the diameter of your waist.

As you may have noticed, preventing backpack pain due to a backpack is possible. It is only necessary to pay a little attention and change some bad habits. The choice of backpack deserves careful consideration and for this reason, we have prepared guides to help you to choose the model that suits you and the features to consider in a backpack.

The mountain teaches us to look beyond what appears to our eyes. What we can learn from the mountain does not involve just technique, physical endurance and climbing. It refers to everything we cannot see either to touch but we can perceive under our skin. These are key life lessons that influence our attitude and our approach to life.

Before exploring what the mountain can teach us, I want to mention a quote from Andy Andrews that I find very meaningful:

“Everybody wants to be on the mountaintop, but if you’ll remember, mountaintops are rocky and cold. There is no growth on the top of a mountain. Sure, the view is great, but what’s a view for? A view just gives us a glimpse of our next destination-our next target. But to hit that target, we must come off the mountain, go through the valley, and begin to climb the next slope. It is in the valley that we slog through the lush grass and rich soil, learning and becoming what enables us to summit life’s next peak.”

What the mountains teach us: 9 lessons about life

1. Great things await us outside the comfort zone

The most beautiful view comes after the toughest climb. No one can say the contrary. Think about the efforts and the determination that lead you step by step towards your destination. Every single step brings you closer and closer to the peak.

The path is not always plain. There are moments when you wonder “why you are doing it”, but if there is a valid “why”, you will also find a reasonable “how”. Embracing the challenges and overcoming fears is the first step to take and the rewards will be great. There are wonderful things waiting for us outside the comfort zone and only through motivation, courage and commitment we are able to achieve them. Rather than waiting for the right time to come, start climbing with the first step.

If you look down you will find your satisfaction, if you look up you will meet your motivation.

2. Mental strength goes beyond physical strength

Mental strength is often underestimated. It is common to think that challenges need to be faced with excellent physical endurance. This is not always the case. So, how would you explain that force that pushes you to move forward despite your legs being about to give up?

It is your mind that takes control and leads you beyond your limits.

It is about being determined and motivated even when the path beneath our feet seems impossible to take. Surrender means abandoning a path halfway without reaching the destination, and it’s true that easy roads have never made a good explorer.

3. Your body constantly communicate with you

Our body communicates with us every single second of the day. Maybe in the daily hustle and bustle, we don’t realize it. The mountain connects us with ourselves, with every single cell of our body. It teaches us to pay more attention to our body and to understand when it is time to slow down and when it is possible to overcome our limits.

There is a moment to take a break, a moment to move forward and a moment to change path.

It is about being aware of every beat and every breath, even the deepest one: the one of relief once you reach the highest peak. Your body talks to you about emotions, try to listen to it.

4. While standing still, everything looks huge

From the valley the mountains look huge, you can hardly see the peak. Step by step you start to climb. Higher and higher, closer and closer to the top. Narrow paths and dizzying heights can be scary, but climbing a mountain also means overcoming your fears to experience something greater, something worth discovering. Fear can inhibit and too much hesitation does not work in your favor, both in life and in the mountains. Do you want to let fear take over your life or overcome fear and live for real?

Sometimes it is necessary to overcome fear and regain self-confidence to live to the fullest. Bigger goals start with a first step and this is often the hardest one. Just to mention a Confucius saying: The man who moves a mountain begins by moving small stones.

5. The concept of time and patience

Nature has its own pace. The water of the streams flows incessantly and smoothes the stones. Solid shrubs take decades to grow. In nature there is no rush and the mountains always remind us that.

In a life marked by the hands of the clock, we are always in a hurry, always full of responsibilities, nature teaches us to cherish time differently, making the most of every single second. While waiting for sunrise and sunset, there is a kind of magic. Without haste, with patience. Nature gives us shades of colors that change from season to season, from hour to hour of the day. The concept of time is different in the mountains and patience helps us to be aware of every single moment.

Live your life at your own rhythm: it’s not a competition to win but a show to appreciate.

6. The beauty of life is also the unexpected

The mountain reminds us that not everything can be predictable and under our control. Everything can change shortly, even the path we are walking on. Where there is life, there is a transformation. There are constant changes, challenges and obstacles and our reaction to the external enviroment can be different.

So why do we try to have everything under control? A predictable life is far easier but it is pretty flat. The mountain teaches that a blue sky could turn grey without warning, an easy path could suddenly hide complications. The unexpected is a part of life and there are challenges that need to be overcome. Difficult roads make real explorers and those who are not afraid of challenges have trust in their own legs, not on the path.

7. The mountain create connections

The connection between human beings and nature is the most beautiful and genuine that can exist. Nature reminds us that we are like trees, similar in shape but unique in our essence, all independent but connected to each other and there is no gender difference. The mountain reminds us of the importance of the union.

A single tree does not make a wood, a single stone does not make a mountain, a single individual does not make a society. It is the union that makes the difference.

Often it is the mountain itself that remembers this value. It makes us appreciate time with ourselves as well as share it with others. It creates empathy and altruism, especially in case of difficulty. In the mountains, you are never alone but connected to the world.

8. Be like water

“Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.

Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless – like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” –  Bruce Lee

This is one of Bruce Lee’s most famous and inspirational quotes. What the mountain streams teach is right this: the water does not stop at the first obstacle, it adapts or finds a way to get around it and often by creating new paths.

Water is life inside and outside yourself.

9. Less is more: that’s the secret of happiness

The mountain teaches that happiness is not contained in the objects we own but in the space that remains free and we fill with emotions. Yes, happiness is part of everything we cannot touch. In the mountain, we can bring a few essentials but there is no space limit for emotions and sensations.

If you had to give a priority, what would you bring and what would you leave out? We know that a heavy backpack is uncomfortable and dangerous. In addition to hindering the movements, you could have the constant worry of losing something along the way. Imagine a backpack as metaphor of life: would you prefer a lightweight, comfortable backpack full of experiences or a heavy, bulky one full of objects? Happiness doesn’t come from material things, but from everything you carry in your heart.

Nature is perfect and through its silence it gives precious lessons about life. The secret is learning to listen to it.

The mountain teaches us what really matters, these are valuable life lessons that we learn only through our attitude and love for nature. Experiences, sensations, reflections and thoughts shape our way of being and our approach to life.

At Royal Eagle Road, we believe that explorers are like determined, strong and bold eagles, and the true exploration is not focused just on the destination, but on the path itself. A unique and unconventional path, just like each of us. For this reason, we have created a range of backpacks that combine features and functionality of outdoor activities with an urban design.

Give a look at our models and we wish you great unconventional explorations!

Choose a reusable insulated bottle: guide to the purchase

Water bottles are not all the same and it is not just a matter of material, price or design. It is important to understand the different materials and features to make an informed purchase. We have prepared some questions to help you to choose the most suitable reusable bottle.

Material

The most common bottles are made of plastic, glass, aluminum and stainless steel. Water bottles can have different materials and prices.

  • Plastic water bottles are the cheapest and lightest on the market but they do not maintain the temperature of the drinks steady. Moreover, the taste of the beverage can be altered after using it for a long time.
  • Glass bottles are safe for health, do not alter the flavors but are fragile and not so handy to carry.
  • Aluminum water bottles are a cheap and light option but they are not stainless (therefore not suitable for every beverage). Over time they could alter the flavors.
  • Stainless steel bottles are sturdy, suitable for all liquids, keep the temperature constant. They are a bit heavier compared to other material.

Liters

On the market, you can choose a reusable bottle of different sizes according to your needs, the space, and the weight you can carry. The most common are 350ml, 500ml, 750ml and one-liter bottles.

Hard or foldable bottle

The reusable bottle made of hard plastic, stainless steel, aluminum or glass has a rigid shape and is easy to clean. It can be easily carried in the side pocket of the backpack without the risk of leaking.

On the contrary, the foldable reusable bottle is made of silicone. It is very lightweight, practical and, when empty, it can be compressed and takes up little space. The downside is that this collapsible bottle is not suitable for hot liquids and the drinks may have a different taste.

Steady temperature

Stainless steel thermal flasks do not only keep your drinks hot by preventing the outside temperature from cooling them. They also have the opposite effect: they keep drinks cold isolating them from the external heat. If you want to keep the temperature of your drinks steady for a long time, choose a stainless steel bottle, better with a double layer of insulation.

If you don’t want to keep the beverage warm or cold, plastic, glass and aluminum bottles are fine.

Single or double insulation wall

The difference between a bottle with a single layer and a double layer of insulation lies in the effectiveness: how long they can keep the temperature of the liquids steady.

A bottle with a single insulation wall keeps the temperature unaltered for less time compared to a bottle with a double layer of insulation. This is because between the two walls there is a layer of air that helps to isolate the liquid contained from outside. As a result, a double-layer insulated bottle costs slightly more than a single-walled bottle.

Rubber or powder coating

Reusable water bottles are different, also the appearance. The powder coating is a paint that gives a colorful look while the non-slip rubber coating is soft to the touch and ensures a firmer grip even on the go.

Screwcap or easy opening

The advantage of having a bottle with a screw cap is a small silicone part inside that hermetically seals the opening and prevents leaking. In reusable plastic bottles, it’s common to find an easy opening. The advantage of the quick-opening cap is that you can easily open it with one hand. As it’s so easy to open it, it’s not completely hermetic opening resulting in leaks and spills.

Everything you need to know about stainless steel water bottles

What does 304 stainless steel insulated bottle mean?

304 stainless steel is also known as 18/8. The abbreviation 18/8 indicates that the alloy contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel. This type of steel is called stainless due to its resistance to oxidation and corrosion and is designed to be in contact with food.

What does BPA free mean?

BPA is the abbreviation for bisphenol A, a chemical compound used in the production of some types of plastics, such as polycarbonate mainly used for food containers, containers and water bottles. BPA can be transferred in small quantities to foods and beverages contained inside. As stated by the European Food Safety Authority, a small amount of BPA does not pose a health hazard as it is below the tolerable daily dose. The acronym BPA-free means that the product does not contain any trace of bisphenol A inside.

Can I put the insulated bottle in the fridge, in the microwave or in the freezer?

No, you can’t place the steel insulated bottle in the fridge, microwave or freezer. As it has one or two walls that isolate the liquids contained, it will have no effect on the drinks and you even risk damaging the bottle.

Can I wash a stainless steel thermal bottle in the dishwasher?

No, you can’t wash stainless steel water bottles in the dishwasher because high temperatures and detergents could damage the material. You just need to wash them with hot water and a drop of dish soap rubbing also the cap threading. Once rinsed thoroughly, let it dry upside down.

When should I wash a stainless steel bottle?

You should clean the thermal bottle daily and not just when changing beverages. Furthermore, when buying a new bottle, it is important the initial wash to disinfect both the body and the thread inside the cap.

Hot 12 hours – Cold 24 hours: what does it mean?

The insulated bottle can keep your hot drinks at the same temperature as when you put them in for up to 12 hours. This is an indicative duration and does not mean that after 12 hours your coffee will be cold. It does indicate that after 12 hours the temperature will slowly start to drop. The same goes for cold drinks which will keep their temperature constant for 24 hours.

If the cap is not hermetically sealed and the bottle is opened frequently, the temperature may change faster.

How does a thermal bottle work?

The reusable thermal bottle has a double wall (also called a double layer) of insulation and a layer of air inside. This helps to slow down the transfer of temperature from outside to inside and vice versa. In other words, it prevents the external heat from heating the cold drink and the internal heat of the hot drink from escaping outside.
It works the same both if the bottle contains hot beverages and cold ones. There are also bottles with a single wall which are cheaper compared to the one with a double wall but do not last so long. A lower price doesn’t mean is a good bargain: in this case, it corresponds to a different quality.

Why choosing a reusable bottle?

A quality reusable water bottle can last ages and you no longer need to buy disposable bottles. WHAT DO THE NUMBERS ON THE MONOCULAR MEAN?

To distinguish different models of monoculars and binoculars, we can use two numbers: for example 12×50 mm or 10×42 mm.

The first number (usually called magnification) indicates the zoom, or how many times the observed images appear enlarged. A 12×50 mm monocular will show us the objects (or subjects) 12 times closer, while a 10×42 mm will have 10 times zoom.

The second number after the x is in millimeters and indicates the diameter of the objective lens. A 12x50mm monocular will have a 50mm diameter objective lens, while a 10x42mm will have a 42mm lens.

Easy, right? Let’s move on and look closer.

MAGNIFICATION

The magnification is the first number of the monocular and indicates how many times the images appear closer to our eyes.

The larger the magnification of the image = The smaller the field of view. What does it mean?

If the image appears bigger to our eyes, the field of view (the space to be framed) is narrower. When observing with the monocular, the vibrations of the hand can make the framed image unclear. With magnifications greater than 10x, you would better use a tripod to have a stable monocular as well as a clear and detailed observation.

On the other hand, if you are searching for a panoramic observation and focus on fewer details, choose a lower magnification.

LENS DIAMETER

The second number after the x indicates the diameter of the objective lens expressed in millimeters which determines the amount of light collected and the width of the field of view. This feature is important in low light conditions such as during sunset or twilight.

The larger the diameter of the lens = The more brightness and visible details = The heavier the monocular

The larger the lenses, the heavier the monocular (or binoculars). Usually monoculars with diameters not exceeding 50 mm are indicated for travel, excursions and outdoor activities, as they are lightweight and practical to carry. For trekking and day observations, a diameter of 20 mm is enough while for night observations, a diameter of 50 mm guarantees greater visibility.

LET’S MAKE AN EXEMPLE

What is the difference between a 10×42 mm and a 12×50 mm monocular?

In the first case, it is a monocular with a magnification up to 10 times and with an objective lens diameter of 42 mm. In the second case, it is a monocular that allows us to see 12 times closer and with a 50 mm objective lens.

By comparing the diameter of the objective lens, the second model will collect more light and the field of view will be wider than the first one. To maintain a more stable and clearer observation, in the second case we will need a tripod.

Understanding what the numbers that appear on the monocular mean is not enough. Follow me to discover other important features to consider.

Adjusting the focus – 12×50 mm monocular telescope

FIELD OF VIEW

The field of view represents the area that you can observe with a monocular (or binoculars) at a distance of 1000 meters (1 km). The unit of measure can be both meters and degrees.

Let’s make an example.

In the technical description of our monocular, you can read Field of view 122M / 1000 M, which means that at a distance of 1 km, you will be able to observe a field of 120 meters.

You may happen to read “Visual angle”, also in this case we refer to the area that we can observe with the monocular but this time expressed in degrees. We can calculate it with a mathematical formula where the factor 17.5 represents the visual field in meters corresponding to a visual field of 1 °.

  • 1000 m field of view = Visual angle in degree x 17,5
  • Visual angle in degree = 1000 m field of view / 17,5

Let’s come back to our example: 12×50 mm monocular with 120 M / 1000 M field of view and apply both formulas to calculate the field of view and the angle of view.

  • Field of view 1000 M = 6.85 x 17,5 = 120
  • Visual angle in degree = 120 / 17,5 = 6.8°

In a nutshell, the monocular has a field of view of 120M / 1000M and has 6.8 ° of field.

The width of the field of view is inversely proportional to the magnification: a 10x monocular will have a greater field of view compared to a 12x monocular.

Greater magnification = Wider field of view

EXIT PUPIL

Another value to consider when buying a monocular is the exit pupil expressed in millimeters which indicates the diameter of the light beam that reaches the eye.

Exit pupil = Diameter of the lens / Magnification

Let’s come back to our 12×50 monocular, the exit pupil will be 4.5 (50/12). A common value for nitid images in the daylight and good images in low light conditions.

Let’s find the reason.

The exit pupil is a parameter to consider as it should be at least as wide as the pupil of our eye, which goes from 2 mm in bright light environment to 7 mm in low light conditions.

The greater exit pupil = The greater transition of light = The brighter the images

Now everything is clear. For night observations, it all depends on the values shown in the product description. The next time you will read the exit pupil value, you can get an idea if the monocular is also suitable for twilight or sunset observations.

EYE RELIEF

Eye relief is different from the exit pupil, although apparently the terms sound similar. Eye relief is the distance between the eyes and the lens of the monocular and goes from 5 to 20 millimeters.

Why you should know this value?

It is especially important for people who wear glasses to understand broadly if the model can fit. When we wear glasses, the eyes are further away from the lens and we risk losing the image. If the distance between the eyes and the lens (i.e. the eye relief) is greater than 17 mm, it means that even wearing glasses, the monocular will show you the same field of view.

The greater the eye relief = The better the observation with glasses

The ideal eye relief for those who wear glasses is 20 mm and is also perfect for viewing with the eye in order to observe clearly and blink.

For example, our monocular has a 20 mm eye relief and through the dioptric adjustment wheel, you can adjust the focus according to your myopia.

TYPES OF LENS

The lenses used for monoculars and binoculars can be made in:

Plastic. They are appreciated for their impact resistance during extreme sports. The images that appear in the eyes are of lower quality, consequently, the price is cheaper.

Glass. They are mostly used in professional monoculars and binoculars. They produce quality images and the price is higher. The glass reflects the light that comes from the outside but this phenomenon is minimized through an anti-reflective treatment on the lens. Abbreviations are used to distinguish the different types of treatment for better light transmission and ensure clear images:

  • C (Coated): External lenses have been coated with a single layer of anti-reflection;
  • MC (Multi Coated): External lenses have been coated with multiple layers of anti-reflective treatment to ensure a better light transmission;
  • FC (Fully Coated): Both the prisms inside the monocular and the external lenses have been coated with a layer of anti-reflective treatment;
  • MFC (Multi Fully Coated): Both the prisms inside the monocular and the external lenses have been coated with multiple layers of anti-reflective treatment for better light transmission and greater protection of the lenses from water, humidity, scratches and accidental falls.

Multi-layer FC and MFC coatings are better compared to a single layer and this also affects the higher cost of the monocular and binoculars.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE A PROFESSIONAL MONOCULAR?

In addition to magnifying distant objects and subjects, the quality of a professional monocular differs not only in the slightly higher price but also in the features that guarantee a clear and brilliant vision. The most common are:

  • Lens with multilayer coating and anti-reflective coating
  • Nitrogen filling between the lens to avoid fogging
  • Diopter adjustment for observation with or without glasses
  • Adjustable focus
  • Waterproof and non-slip rubber
  • Additional features that make it versatile (es. flashlight o laser)
  • Accessories included such as tripods

“THE BEST MONOCULAR” IS NOT AN EVALUATION CRITERIA

On the internet, I often read phrases such as “The best binoculars” “The most powerful monocular”. I wonder, on what basis can monocular or binoculars be labeled as “better” or “powerful”?

I will tell you a secret: There are no objective factors to determine the ideal tool.

Each observation requires adequate magnification and there are some features to consider:

  • Size of objects and subjects to observe
  • Weight and size of the tool
  • Type of use: professional, amateur, day-time, night-time
  • Eventual accessories (e.g. lens caps, case, tripod)
  • Price range

The next time you will read a technical product description, you will know what the numbers on the monoculars or binoculars mean as well as recognize the difference between a professional model and a toy model. But now let’s focus on the practical tips for observation.

How to adjust the tripods – 12×50 mm professional monocular

PRACTICAL TIPS

The higher the magnification = The heavier the tool = The more arm fatigue = The more visible the hand vibrations

So how to have a more stable and detailed vision?

Portable supports such as monopod or tripod are definitely the best solution to reduce hand vibrations. A foldable and small size tripod can make your observation pleasant and sharp.

Now you may wonder: “How can I do if I don’t have a support with me?”

Just think of professional photographers when shooting freehand: squeezing the elbows to the chest to limit the movements of the arm muscles, leaning on a hard surface (e.g. on a table, a fence, a rock, a wall or tree).

HOW TO READ A TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION EASILY

Let’s do a recap of all the points we have covered in this guide to read a professional product description and choose the suitable monocular.

  • Magnification. The first number indicates how many times the images appear close to our eyes. For example, a 12×50 mm indicates a magnification of 12 times.
  • Lens diameter. The second number indicates the diameter in millimeters of the frontal lens. It indicates the amount of light collected and the size of the field of view. In our example, the lens is 50 mm large.
  • Field of view. It represents the area that you can observe with a monocular (or binoculars) at a distance of 1000 meters (1 km). A field of view of 122M / 1000M means that at a distance of 1km, you can observe a field of 120 meters. This point is important to consider if you want to have broad observations, such as during sporting events.
  • Exit pupil. It indicates the diameter of the light beam (and consequently the brightness) that reaches the eye and this value varies from 2 to 7 mm.
  • Eye relief. It is the distance between the eyes and the lens of the monocular and varies from 5 to 20 millimeters. An important value to consider especially for those who wear glasses.
  • Types of lens. Glass lenses can have one or more layers of anti-reflective treatment. A higher number of layers ensure sharper vision.

No more secrets in the technical description of monoculars and binoculars. Even if you don’t try it physically, you already know what the numbers that appear on the monocular mean and all the features to consider for a model suitable for you. Now it’s your turn! Trekking is interesting and in the last years, more and more people decide to tie trekking shoes, pack a backpack and enjoy a new adventure. Have you even considered it? Untouched nature, astonishing landscapes, fresh air. I guess you can’t wait. What you need are some trekking tips for beginners and here you go: ready for a new exploration!

How do I start trekking? Do I need a specific preparation? What equipment should I bring? How do I choose the right backpack for me?

If one of these questions sounds familiar, this guide is for you! Here you will find the trekking tips for beginners: from the preparation to the path. Take note of all the points because we have listed 20 tips and if you have any suggestions you want to leave in the comments, we will be happy to add them to the list!

Trekking Tips for Beginners – Preparation

1. Carefully plan your path. Are you searching for an easy path in the hills or a more challenging trail in the mountains? Choose a path that is right for you. Online you can find lots of ideas and inspiration, as well as plenty of experienced hikers who can give you suggestions. Always make sure to check in advance the weather forecast.

2. Join some trekking groups (online and above all offline). Wherever you are located, there are many groups and associations that organize outdoor activities. As this is your first time doing trekking, you could join a group and make friends. You can find local and national trekking groups where you can exchange tips, share interests and find new paths. You could start searching on Facebook or on Meetup.

3. Don’t forget the first aid kit. A common mistake that many beginners make is forgetting the first aid kit. Especially if you are planning a challenging or long route, bring something that could save your adventure: plasters, bandages, essential medicines, cream for mosquito bites and sunburn, etc.

4. Watch out for the sun, especially at high altitudes. If you plan to hike in the mountains, remember that the sunrays are stronger and can cause sunburns, in the worst scenario even rashes or heat stroke. Don’t be misled by some clouds. Prepare a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a cooling towel (once you find out what it is needed for, you cannot do without it!)

5. Map, compass and GPS at hand. Orientation is the key. If you can find a map with the path traced, fountains and other useful information, put it in your backpack as it could prove to be essential. If you have never had to read a map before, orient yourself with a compass or follow the position with the GPS. Now is the time to learn how to use them: a skill that always comes in handy in life.

6. Inform someone before leaving. Better safe than sorry. Before leaving, share your itinerary and approximate return time with your family and friends, especially since there is no phone signal in the mountains. It is a valuable piece of advice that has saved lives in many cases.

7. Prepare a list. A list of items to bring is always a wise choice. It helps you to remember the things you need and also saves your time while packing your backpack.

8. Technical gear. In the mountains, the weather is always unpredictable and the higher you climb, the lower the temperature. For this reason, we recommend you to dress in layers and bring technical clothing for the mountains. They need to be comfortable, breathable and quick-drying (cotton is not recommended as the fabric absorbs water and dries slowly). Always remember to bring a waterproof jacket, just in case.

9. Proper equipment. Before stepping on the path, choose your equipment carefully and check that everything works properly. Try everything at home to avoid unpleasant surprises during your adventure: backpack, poles, but also tent, sleeping bag, camping stove if you plan to stay a few nights.

10. Backpack space organization. The trekking backpack has to be lightweight and contains just the essentials. Remove packaging you don’t need and carefully organize available space so you can easily find what you need and save valuable time.

Trekking Tips for beginners – During the path

1. Short route and some breaks. For the first time, start with a short and easy route, better not too far from your town: it can be a great way to become comfortable with the environment and make your first trekking experience safer. Listen to your body and take some breaks to relax your legs. Last but not least, follow your pace: you are doing trekking, not a marathon!

2. Learn to change plans. We often set the goal of reaching a destination and try in every way to stick to our initial plan. Keep in mind that there are circumstances that we cannot predict such as the weather or route variations. Especially because it is a first trekking experience, do not venture into snow-capped mountains at risk of avalanches or along inaccessible paths. Learn to change plans and if necessary, postpone your adventure.

3. Pay attention to hydration. Drink water frequently during trekking even if you are not thirsty. Dehydration, in addition to being dangerous, could cause sudden headaches and cramps. You can choose to bring a thermos to keep your water fresh, the hydration bladder to stay hydrated even on the go or water purifiers such as tablets, filters or UV sterilizers to save space and weight. Always consider the right water quantity.

4. Pack more food. In the event that trekking will take longer than expected or your body needs a greater amount of energy, it is better to bring something more to eat. Yes to energetic bars, whole grains, dried fruit and fresh fruit. These foods are ideal because they give energy, are easily digestible, provide essential nutrients and take up little space.

5. Leave no trace. Leave no traces and respect nature and animals. In the mountains and in any environment in general, there is the principle of leaving no traces and not abandoning waste. In the backpack you can not forget a bag to take everything with you and throw it in the garbage. The principle applies also on the contrary: do not bring back anything that was not in your backpack originally.

6. Respect for other people. Nature is a calm and silent environment where people love to spend time to find tranquility. If someone is listening to music and the volume is too loud, this could disturb the peace of other people and wild animals. Always think about it.

7. Trekking poles are useful. It really depends on the path. If it is particularly challenging, we recommend bringing them. Trekking poles are valuable allies to support our body, support weight and reduce the pressure on the knees. They can also be useful for measuring the depth of any watercourses to cross on foot.

8. Your feet deserve care as well. Shoes and socks cannot be left to chance. Always choose shoes you have already walked in, they need to be comfortable and suitable for the path. To avoid blisters, choose technical and padded socks. Do not keep your feet wet for long walking: it’s better to take a break to change them with a dry pair.

9. Protect yourself from the sun. Keep in mind that the sun at high altitudes is very strong. When trekking in the mountains, always remember to bring sunscreen, protective glasses, a hat and a cooling towel to give you a relief and fresh sensation.

10. A rain cover for the backpack is also useful in the sun. Not everyone knows that the rain cover for the backpack is not only for rain. It is also useful for making the backpack visible from a distance, keeping it clean and for wrapping the equipment attached to the outside and preventing it from getting stuck on branches or rocks. Did you know it?

Tips to wear the trekking backpack

Trekking depends also on the backpack. It must be resistant (otherwise the backpack will break in the middle of nature), padded to cushion the weight (especially on the backrest and shoulder straps), suitable for one’s body shape (otherwise it will block movements or swing while walking).

The size of the backpack depends on the amount of equipment to bring and the duration of the trek. To wear it correctly it is important to unfasten all the straps and start adjusting:

  1. Hip belt at the height of the hips (if placed too high it will block movements, if placed too low it will not cushion the weight correctly)
  2. Shoulder straps which will follow the shape of the shoulders
  3. Load straps to adjust the position of the backpack more or less close to the body
  4. Chest straps (on the sternum) to keep the backpack shoulder straps steady and in the correct position.

We reached the end of our trekking guide: 20 tips for beginners. It’s time to pack your backpack and get ready for a new experience!
